There are many things in life we can control, and others we cannot. We cannot control our genes, but we can influence how our genes are expressed.
My moment of realization came seven years ago, when I found myself lying on the bedroom floor in tears. I had hit rock bottom. I was a busy mom, working hard, taking care of everyone and everything, our home, my family, my responsibilities, and yet I felt terrible. I was struggling with brain fog, muscle pain, fatigue, anxiety, joint pain, and swelling.
Coincidentally, I was also having difficulty getting pregnant. My mother had suffered with similar symptoms, though on a much more severe level, along with autoimmune conditions that were elusive and poorly understood. That history pushed me to dig deeper and search for the root cause of what I was experiencing. I went to my primary care physician several times. Everything came back “normal,” except for low vitamin D, but I didn’t feel normal. I later saw a rheumatologist and underwent extensive testing, only for those results to come back normal as well. The advice I received was often the same: “We’ll keep an eye on it,” or “Let’s see how you do with some prednisone.” When I asked what I could do to help myself, the answer was simple: eat healthy, follow a Mediterranean diet, exercise, and try yoga.
It was a two-sentence conversation. I felt failed by the very field I had studied and loved for so many years. It felt as though I had to wait until a full-blown disease appeared in my labs before anyone could give me answers or a diagnosis. As I lay there on the floor in tears, a realization hit me: I could potentially spend the rest of my life feeling this way. How could this be happening? In that moment, I knew I had to take action. I could either continue lying there and crying about it, or I could get up and do something about it.
That moment sent me on a journey of self-healing, research, reflection, and discovery. As I moved through that journey, I began noticing a pattern. Many of my patients, especially women, were experiencing similar struggles. And often, their skin told the story. I couldn’t keep this knowledge to myself. I couldn’t stay silent.
I made a promise to bring light to the darkness for my patients. I vowed always to dig a little deeper, to remain deeply committed to prevention, and to provide education and guidance for those who needed it most. This is a never-ending journey. As I care for and support my patients, I continue to heal and grow as well.
It is a path we walk together.
